I will be using Stephen Kings Mr Mercedes for my main source. I will adapt Mr Mercedes. In my adaptation I will be creating a new monster in a person who would never of been expected to be a monster.
The things I like about the book is mostly everything besides a few things. I like the story of how the Main character tries to catch the monster and how the book switches from the prospective of the detective to the prospective of the killer and tells both of their story’s until the intertwine. I also liked how Hodges develops throughout the story from being a drunk retired detective to catching the infamous Mr Mercedes killer. The last thing I liked was all of the twists that the story had with how Brady technically killed his mother on accident when the meat patty was really for the dog. The things I don’t like are the gore in the beginning of the book, and how gross Brady’s relationship with his mother is. It just doesn’t make you want to keep reading because it grosses you out. The things I would change is the gore at the beginning of the book the way he describes it you can visualize it in your mined and it’s not very pleasant and also the relationship Brady has with his mother.
Changing the setting of the book I don’t think would effect the book that much. You could change the setting to any place in the US and It wouldn’t effect the story much unless there was a lot more crime in the city. Changing the time of the story would drastically change the story because if there wasn’t a job shortage or if it was before Mercedes were built then there wouldn’t be a story to tell. Adding a new character would put a new spin in things giving the killer a bother or a follower and also giving Hodges a retired detective wife to help him catch the Mercedes killer. There already is two more books so adding a sequel won’t really do that much it won’t make a difference of how the story is portrayed.
In my adaptation my idea is to make the main character detective Hodges become the killer. He becomes insane because of all the things he saw throughout his carries and once he found Brady’s room with all of his plans he becomes the new Mercedes killer without anyone Expecting that the new killer is him. In the adaptation Hodges caught the Mercedes killer and the last thing he said was the location to his house and in the house he saw everything he was working on and decided to become the new monster in the story. The central question I want to make it about is the idea that anyone can become a monster even good people that have done a lot of good. The point I will try to make is monsters can be created with their own free will.
